Video Transcript – Community Service CHARLES ENRIQUEZ … I think that a common misconception amongst students in the application process is that all we care about are class rank and test scores, and that’s just not the case. We at the university, as well as many universities, want to see well-rounded students. Students, who are going to give back to their school, give back to their community. DENNIS MCMILLAN The admissions office at a lot of schools will focus attention on extracurricular activities for students, and maybe even more importantly, scholarship selection committees will certainly place a lot of weight on the activities of students outside the classroom. SHANTE STINSON … the admissions officers want to see that you have a life and that you’re not just going to school and going home or just hanging out. They want to see if you have responsibility to take leadership roles. They want to know more about you, about you as a person and what you like to do. Your activities reveals that to them. ROGER YOUNG … it’s what you bring to the university in terms of certain kinds of personality, in terms of certain kind of potential. We’re looking for students that will make an impact on society when they leave here, will change the world for the better. DENNIS MCMILLAN … I hear of students that go out and volunteer on the weekends with Habitat for Humanity. That’s the kind of thing that causes students to think about where they are in this world and how other people may not, may not be at that same level but it gets them in that mindset where, I can, I can use my education throughout my life to help other people. ROGER YOUNG … we encourage students to find one or two things they really care about and get very deeply involved in that. That way they can develop some real impact. They can develop some real skills, organizational skills, leadership skills, critical thinking skills, problem-solving skills - so we think that’s important. CHARLES ENRIQUEZ …college isn’t just about what you learn in the books, it’s also the social experiences you gain, and I think that’s something that’s really good when students are meeting others, exchanging ideas, becoming leaders in these organizations, that’s a whole other lesson that you’re learning at the university that you just can’t get in the books. So that’s something that I think the resume - it’s going to show to a university that this student is willing to learn from outside of the classroom.
